A message from the Premier: Making Queensland Safer

A little later on today, Her Excellency is expected to sign off on the Making Queensland Safer Laws, which passed the Parliament last night.

And I want to update you directly as the Queensland Public Service, firstly with my thanks and then a blueprint of where to from here.

To everyone who worked on the bill, you did an incredible amount of work in a really short period of time and I'm really, really grateful for that and to see it pass Parliament and to be able to fulfill that election commitment is something I'm truly grateful for.

The hard work starts now, and that's where we really need all arms of the Queensland Public Service pushing in one direction to make sure that we can make the community safer, which was a really important part of what we took to the election campaign.

So firstly there's the enforcement of the laws and we certainly want to thank the police for the hard work that they've done and we do hope that these laws help them be able to do their job.

We're really committed to early intervention and work will begin on making sure that we deliver the best early intervention this state's ever seen.

For those of you working in child safety, I want you to know we understand how much pressure you have been under and we are focused on making sure that you have more resources to do your job.

We have looked at the residential care sector and we are committed to making sure we can support them to give young people the hope and the discipline and the structure and the love in their life that's missing.

Ultimately, our number one focus is fewer victims and that is what all of this is about. It's about laws to send a message that there are consequences for actions, and then there's got to be all those other elements of government.

The early intervention, the rehabilitation with purpose. So whether you're in health, in education, in child safety, police or any of those other elements of government that will be implementing these laws, just know that we are most grateful for the work that will come.

And regardless where you work for, you're all Queenslanders and this is something that is passionate to me, but it's something that we need to do as a state to make sure that we do leave the community in a safer place.

I want to thank everyone for the work that's been done to date and look forward to seeing this roll out in the weeks, months and years ahead.
