In person learning
Introduction to human-centred design workshop
The Introduction to human-centred design workshop is a free, in-person, one day workshop for Queensland Government employees, delivered by The Department of Customer Services, Open Data and Small and Family Business.
The workshop is designed for beginners or people looking to refresh their skills and there are no pre-requisites for attending.
You’ll learn about the principles and practices of human-centred design and how they can be applied to government projects, and the different phases and tools used in the design process, such as conducting user research, creating personas, and building and testing prototypes. You’ll have the opportunity to put your learnings into practice and work in small groups to complete a mini design sprint.
Workshops are delivered monthly at a Brisbane CBD location.
You can attend the workshop as an individual, or if you have a group of people and access to a venue at your workplace, we can come to you and deliver a workshop for your team.
Book your place or register your interest in attending
Workshops are booked online through Humanitix. They start at 9am and finish by 4pm.
You will get an email from Humanitix to confirm your booking. Keep this email in case you need to cancel or reschedule. You can email the HCD Team to help you book into a workshop.
Closer to the workshop day we will send you an Outlook meeting invitation confirming the details you need to know. We do need minimum numbers to run the workshop and appreciate you accepting (or declining) the invitation, so we know you’re attending.
Changes to workshops
We try to give as much warning as possible if there are any changes to the workshop. Occasionally we do have to reschedule events.

The Department of Customer Services, Open Data and Small and Family Business collects personal information from you for the purpose of contacting you about training.

Our facilitator Dylan will arrive at approximately 8.30am to set up and will be available to chat if you have questions or would like to talk about any requirements you may have during the day.
During the workshop
Workshop schedule
The workshop starts with a short theory session with a PowerPoint presentation first thing in the morning.
The rest of the day is activity-based group work in teams of 4-8 people. It’s very interactive—think lots of chatting, drawing, writing and building. You’re encouraged to participate in the activities at a level you are comfortable with.
The workshop format is:
- 9am start
- 10.30am morning tea break for 15 minutes
- 12.15pm lunch for 30 minutes
- 2.30pm afternoon break for 15 minutes
- 4pm finish.
Chat to your facilitator if you need to arrive or leave at different times.

Sensory experience
Sometimes the venue can get quite busy and loud, especially around arrival and break times.
The workshop venue is a large room with plenty of space to move around. Being part of a larger venue, there is limited control over the lighting and temperature, but please talk to the facilitator to ask if there are adjustments that can be made to make you more comfortable.
Retreat options
You are welcome to take breaks when needed. The workshop venue has several quiet spaces that you can access during the day. Please chat to the HCD Team before the workshop day, or the facilitator or Conference Centre front desk on the day for how to access these spaces.
